What happens during eyelid surgery?
During the blepharoplasty procedure, patients will have excess skin and fat removed from the upper, lower, or both eyelids. This will depend on the patient’s needs. This outpatient procedure is often completed in less than three hours and is done with general anesthesia or IV sedation. Certain techniques are used to complete this surgery in a way that provides less complications such as bruising. Some patients choose to have their blepharoplasty performed at the same time as other facial surgeries to get the best final results.
Who is the ideal eyelid surgery candidate?
Any adult woman or man who is in good health and is experiencing relaxed, sagging tissues in the eyes may be considered for this procedure. Patients will need to have realistic expectations of what can be achieved with this treatment, and should be doing it for themselves, not someone else. Recovering from blepharoplasty
Patients who are interested in the eyelid procedure will want to speak to their doctor beforehand about what to expect during the healing process. Recover can take a week or two, and patients will initially experience swelling and bruising around the surgical site. This is typically minimal and will diminish with time. Mild discomfort may be experienced but can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications. Patients can expect to take approximately one week off of normal activities before returning to school or work.
