Your abdominoplasty questions answered

Are you unhappy with the unwanted fat that has accumulated in the stomach area? Do you feel as though liposuction would leave you with significant skin sagging? If you are within your ideal weight range and want to touch up the abdominal area with cosmetic surgery, Dr. Samuel Lin of Boston, MA may recommend an abdominoplasty. This procedure combines both liposuction for fat removal and manual excess skin removal to achieve a tighter, firmer midsection.

What happens during abdominoplasty?

The abdominoplasty procedure, more commonly known as a tummy tuck, starts with liposuction of unwanted fat. The fat is removed through a tube called a cannula that is inserted into the skin and moved around to suction fat cells out into a canister connected to the device. Then, the doctor assesses the amount of excess skin leftover. By making an incision along the midsection just above the pubic area, the doctor can then remove skin that may be left behind following the liposuction procedure. The skin is eliminated and the doctor will suture the patient to complete the surgery.

Does an abdominoplasty procedure act as a weight loss solution?

Some patients will have a significant amount of fat cells removed from their body during a tummy tuck. However, this does not make it a recommended weight loss procedure. In fact, Dr. Samuel Lin will also consult with patients initially to determine if they are a good candidate. Most adults who are within their ideal weight range and want to tighten up the stomach area are better suited for these procedures.
