When Breast Reduction May Be Considered by Women
- Posted on: Oct 15 2019
When patients think of breast augmentation, they often think of the placement of implants to increase the size of the breasts and to address uneven breast sizes. However, there is another treatment may consider if they are in a different position. This treatment is the breast reduction procedure.
What is a breast reduction?
Dr. Samuel Lin of Boston, MA describes a breast reduction as the removal of excess breast tissue to make the breasts smaller. This procedure is typically an elective procedure, unless the patient is having the breasts reduced due to medical problems.
When might a woman consider breast reduction?
There are many situations that can arise during which a woman may consider having her breast size reduced. Below are just a few examples of times where breast reduction has been beneficial:
- Women who have trouble finding clothes that fit properly due to their large breasts
- Women who are embarrassed by the size of their breasts and the attention it may cause
- Women with pain in the back, neck, and shoulders due to the weight of the breasts
- Women who are unable to participate in regular activities such as exercise because of their breasts
What can I expect from breast reduction surgery?
Patients first start with a consultation appointment with our provider, Dr. Samuel Lin. He evaluates the patient to determine if breast reduction would be beneficial. He educates patients on the process. The doctor will create an incision in the breast area where the appearance of scarring will be much less visible. Through this incision, breast tissue is removed. In most cases, patients will also have excess skin removed as well. When the doctor closes the incision, he also ensures that the nipple is repositioned accordingly for a natural appearance. Sutures will be added to close the incision, and patients will leave the practice with special aftercare instructions after surgery.
