What to expect from surgery
As with any surgical procedure, there are certain precautions that need to be taken before the surgery is performed as well as after to reduce the risk of infection or other complications. Patents should follow these instructions to prepare themselves for their surgery. Post-operative instructions should also be followed to reduce complications. Patients should expect to take some time off of work, school, and other activities to allow for proper healing of the ear following the procedure.
Post-operative expectations
Patients should prepare for their ears to be covered with bandages. Pain medication can be taken to decrease discomfort only if it is recommended by the doctor. Patients should avoid sleeping on their side, which can cause pressure in the ears and affect incisions and healing. Patients should only allow their doctor to remove bandages during recall appointments and follow-up visits. Some patients may need to have stitches removed while others will have stitches that dissolve on their own over time. Ask the doctor when it is okay to resume other activities such as showering and exercise.
