BOTOX® is a substance in which Botulinum Toxin is used to treat the visual signs of aging by minimizing wrinkles.  It is considered a safe and effective means of dealing with aging eyebrows and “crow’s feet” around the eyes. BOTOX® has proven to be one of the best forms of non-surgical of facial rejuvenation.

What’s The Difference Between Botox® And Dermal Fillers?

Botox® is classified as a neuromodulator because it acts to block nerve messages and keeping muscles from contracting. Dynamic wrinkles form on the skin above a contracting muscle when we make common expressions such as frowning, squinting, or showing surprise. Botox stops these muscles from contacting so the wrinkle that forms above them never forms.

Dermal fillers do things in a completely different way. They are injected beneath a wrinkle, crease, or area of volume loss, and they simply fill the area back in, pushing up the skin. Fillers don’t have anything to do with muscles. They work on static wrinkles caused by sun damage, collagen loss, personal habits, and the like.

Who Is A Candidate For Botox®?

It depends on if you’re trying to erase dynamic wrinkles. These are the wrinkles that form on the upper third of the face and are caused by muscle contractions under the skin. If you want to address crow’s feet, the 11s between your eyebrows, and forehead lines, then Botox® is the answer.

However, if you want to do something about those creases and wrinkles on the lower half of your face — smile lines, marionette lines, parentheses lines, barcode lines, and the like — Botox is not the answer. In fact, Botox has no effect on those creases and lines because they aren’t caused by muscle contractions. Instead, those “static” wrinkles form due to sun damage, declining collagen production, personal habits such as smoking, and other factors. Static wrinkles show themselves at all times.

Static wrinkles are the domain of dermal fillers such as Juvéderm and Restylane. When these fillers are injected beneath a crease, they instantly add volume, fill the space, and push the surface skin back upwards. This fills the crease or wrinkle.

I am very pleased with the results of my procedure with Dr. Lin. From the very start, he answered all of my questions and was easy to communicate with. I felt very comfortable and safe in his hands, and would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a professional, kind, and warm doctor.

How Many Botox® Treatment Sessions Will I Need?

Botox® is a single treatment injectable. Once it fully relaxes the muscle three to four days after being injected, this is all you need. From there, Botox® will keep the muscle relaxed and your wrinkles erased for about four months.

General Procedure

A small amount of BOTOX® (typically 1-2 cc’s) is injected into the area of wrinkle. It acts by blocking impulses at nerve ending to corresponding facial muscles causing them to relax. An ice pack is then immediately applied upon completion of the BOTOX® treatment. The effects of BOTOX® treatments can last three to six months after which the procedure is repeated.

Recovery Process

Normal activity is resumed immediately following the procedure. It is recommended that patients follow postoperative instructions to optimize outcomes. In the first 24 hours patients should avoid vigorous massaging or rubbing the injected area. Furthermore, patients should avoid intense physical exercise, applying cosmetics, or laying down flat for a minimum of 4 hours following the injections.
